Generally my posts are about knitting, tips and helpful sites etc.
I haven’t posted content in a while because I have been very busy. Not only due to the time of year (which has ALOT to do with it) but also because of work, work and kids! I know all of you can relate.
I list work twice because I hold down a full time job along with managing my own part time job. My part time job and my passion is my shop on Etsy. I have had a shop on Etsy for just about a year now and I love it. I sell my own knit items as well as jewelry and am looking to add some new items soon.
Having a part time job on top of a 9 to 5 job can require a lot of time and energy. You need to be on top of your shop and make sure items are current and will catch a shoppers attention. Time is needed on social media to engage and draw in potential customers. Creation of items for sale of course is crucial.
How do you maintain all this and still have a happy family? I keep my family involved and up to date with what is going on. My daughters are a part of the decision making process for what I sell. I enlist their help in selecting patterns and yarn. I use them for modeling and helping create – where they can. It is a family business and I feel that this makes them feel important and happy.
My daughters are older, 15 and 19, so this certainly helps, but I think children of any age can benefit from being a part of your after work activities, or if you are a fulltime mom and you have a hobby it can work as well. My experience with my children is that they have always wanted to learn, help and be involved. Even when they were much younger. This will help them feel a part of what you are doing even if they can’t knit or crochet or whatever.
I am also a single mom and for a long time struggled with raising my children and making sure I had enough money to support us. I did not want to go out and get some run of the mill part time job since I did not like the thought of leaving them home all the time. Having a shop that I can do as much or as little with as I like is definitely the best way for me to get at a little more income without being away from home as well as using my lifelong hobby as a way to get that income.
If you would love to turn your hobby into more than a pass time I encourage you to check into Etsy , I know that the experience has been a positive one for me.
